Algae blooms in Roggero Reservoir

For this project we studied algae blooms in the Roggero Reservoir, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. This was done in the context of the "Remote Sensing" subject of the Environmental Engineering career in National University of San Martin (UNSAM).

We first aimed to separate the water from the algae and the surroundings. Then, we wanted to find if there was correlation between the weather and the bloom events, or if they weren't and therefore mainly related to human activities.

We were able to separate areas with only water and areas with high, medium and low density of algae: that is,we were able to separate 4 areas in the Sentinel-2 images. Using GEE, we were able to find that there was no correlation of the blooms with ambient temperature so we conclude that the blooms are probably related to fertilizer spills, given the rural characteristics of the upstream area.
