Brownfield sites, according to the US EPA, are "properties that contain or may contain a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant, complicating efforts to expand, redevelop or reuse them." What I set out to determine through creation of this map, was if there is any correlation between Brownfield sites and median household incomes. This map shows the number of Brownfield sites located in each tract, along with the median household income for the tract.
Tampa, historically industrial especially in the port area, shows contamination of several different kinds in these sites, which you can see are especially concentrated in the South Tampa (port) area. The highest count of sites in one tract is 9, with a median annual household income of $26,000-$55,000. What I found was that incomes did tend to be lower nearby Brownfield sites- there were no Brownfield sites in this study area that were in the top income bracket from the data.
To determine the association of Brownfield sites and median household income, further analysis of the data measuring the proximity of sites to each income bracket and site history will be conducted.
