[Full StoryMap Link] Through the William & Mary Institute for Integrative Conservation, chosen students are afforded the opportunity to partner with conservation-oriented non-profits and employ their GIS knowledge to work on diverse projects that the host organization desires.
Alongside Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy, I create interpretive maps and educational signage that engage a wide range of audiences in bird and wetland conservation. These deliverables are integrated either into Ripley's website/social media, or directly printed out for use at their site in Litchfield, Connecticut.
In the fall semester of 2025, I created a comprehensive StoryMap regarding the Siberian Crane, a species that is currently facing critical endangerment. Various data were consolidated during the research phase, including:
Remotely-sensed bird sighting points
Georeferencing PDF maps from Asian conservation NGO's
Requesting and integrating spatial data from IUCN
Hand-drawing polygons based on scientific reports or historical accounts
Tabular population data from literature reviews
This project demonstrates my ability to understand data (both spatial and non-spatial) from multiple sources and to create products that reflect the complex synthesis of these data. As someone who enjoys hiking and the outdoors, I am passionate about endangered bird conservation and hope that my deliverables are useful to audiences of all ages.
