This project aims to determine the area in Sumatra island suitable for Arabica coffee grow in the actual climate condition (2018) and predict the area suitable in 20 years (2040) and 40 years (2060). (the years in exam are chosen based on the data availability)
The ideal conditions for high quality arabica coffee cultivation are
- Altitude: 900 – 2000 m
- Rainfall annually: 1500- and 2500-mm
- Temperature: 15 – 25 C
So the study points to predict the area belonging to the interval 900 – 2000 m, and use some weather prediction model to restrict the area where the rainfall and temperature belongs to the interval above in 2018, 2040 and 2060
Data used for the analysis:
- A Digital elevation model for Sumatra Island (the analysis was restricted only to Sumatra Island). For this scope, the data were retrieved from https://dwtkns.com/srtm30m/.
- Climate models for every year in exam (2018, 2040, 2060). The climate models were obtained from https://www.worldclim.org/data/worldclim21.html.
- Indonesia shape file from https://data.humdata.org/.
