Whian Whian Rainforest

This project demonstrates how publicly available LiDAR data (from elevation.org) can be processed with pure Python to derive standard scientific metrics like:

  • Digital Terrain Model (DTM) — ground elevation

  • Digital Surface Model (DSM) — top of canopy/vegetation

  • Canopy Height Model (CHM) = DSM – DTM

From the CHM, we extract mean/max canopy height and height distribution—key indicators of rainforest maturity and biodiversity.
