International GIS Day 2023

Several of my coworkers and I organized an International GIS Day event at our place of work. This was meant to introduce GIS to coworkers who were unfamiliar with spatial data. There was a map gallery, a "where are you from" pin board map, a GIS themed quiz with prizes, and some ESRI swag available for those walking by. It's a large office building of over ten thousand people, so we ran out of things early. We estimated we'd need 300 pins for the map, and that was not enough!

For the map gallery, my goal was to create something engaging, bright, and educational. I figured most people have seen a choropleth map, but how many non-GIS people have seen bi-variate choropleths? I hunted around Business Analyst to find some fun survey data that could have a good correlation as well as outliers. I decided to go with a map about cooking. One variable reported how many people said they liked cooking, the other variable showed how many people said they'd bought a cookbook in the last year. So the map shows us where people are using cookbooks they bought, where they're just winging it (or using older books), and where they're buying cookbooks and not actually using them. On the map, I included call-outs that explained how to interpret a bi-variate choropleth and what some common map layout elements are.

I also printed out (and cut out by hand..) a time series map just for fun. I've included a gif of me flipping through it.
