Invasive Species: Burmese Python

This project was a collaborative effort focused on mapping the spread and impact of the invasive Burmese Python in Florida. Initially, our group explored several topics before ultimately selecting this one due to the species’ ecological significance. I contributed by researching the introduction, migration patterns, and environmental impact of pythons, as well as compiling and cleaning large datasets—over 13,000 data points—related to recorded sightings.

Using ArcGIS Online, I designed maps that illustrated both distribution density and potential migration routes. This involved symbolization, layering, and experimentation with various visualization methods, including dot density and heat mapping. I also handled key cartographic elements such as scale, legends, and labeling to ensure clarity and usability.

From a teamwork perspective, I helped organize responsibilities through a shared project outline and storyboard. While I was responsible for building two of the main maps, I also supported editing, formatting, and integrating my group members’ contributions. Despite technical challenges (snapping errors, rigid migration lines, and occasional software crashes) and some setbacks due to illness, I ensured progress continued and coordinated communication within the team.

Through this project, I gained valuable experience in data acquisition, geospatial analysis, and effective visualization techniques in ArcGIS. More importantly, I developed practical skills in project management, collaboration, and problem-solving under time constraints. The final result was an interactive map series that highlights the Burmese Python’s impact on Florida’s ecosystems and communicates the urgency of ongoing mitigation efforts.
