After the devastating 2023 brushfire razed Lahaina, Maui, the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) announced the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program for Leeward Oahu in 2024. During high wind events, HECO will shut down power service in areas that are prone to wildfires. This means the 20+ BWS facilities (pump stations, wells, reservoirs, etc.) will be affected, shutting off water service to nearly all of Leeward Oahu. After these announcements, I was contacted by the Office of The Chief Engineer to compile maps of all Leeward water systems and BWS facilities overlaid with the PSPS polygon data provided by HECO to be used in stakeholder and civil engineering meetings.
