I vectorized this old military map of Sabang City from 1945. After rotating and cropping the map I georeferenced it in QGIS. I reclassified and cleaned the raster, converted to vector and then cleaned and manually edited the vector geometry.
Sabang is a small Island that lies at the mouth of the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for quite some centuries. Both my grandfathers have spent time here during different stages of their lives for different reasons.
To keep it short, one of em was born here in 1926. I was told he once saw a submarine move underwater while taking a swim in the sea. The other was a military driver and set his first foot in Indonesia here in Sabang in 1948. Most likely, this is where he ate his first Nasi Goreng.
