Springfield Urban Heat Island

This project is a piece of my final project for a remote sensing course. In this project, my group decided to invesitgate the urban heat island effect in Springfield, MA as compared to neighboring communities. The goal of this project was to show how areas with lower wealth tend to suffer from greater impacts of heat because of a lack of greenspace which helps mitigate heat island effects. This map is created from satellite imagery from Landsat 8 of Springfield in the summer of 2018. We sourced our imagery from EarthExplorer. The workflow for this project is as follows:

  • Calculate Top Of Atmosphere (TOA) radiance

  • Convert TOA radiance to brightness temperature (Kelvin)

  • Calculate NDVI

  • Calculate land surface emissivity

  • Calculate emissivity

  • Calculate land surface temperature

  • Calculate UHI

  • Clip output to study area extent and create layout
