Verified Sightings of Tornado in Alberta

This project explores tornado occurrence patterns in Alberta, examining both the frequency and location of tornadoes between 1980 and 2009 using data from the Canadian National Tornado Database. The map data reveals that tornado sightings are most prevalent in the southern half of the province. This trend may be attributed to the interaction between warm air from the south and cold air from the north, which can create favorable conditions for tornado formation. However, one limitation of the dataset is that a significant portion of Alberta’s population resides in the southern half, meaning that tornadoes in the northern regions may be underreported due to fewer witnesses in those areas.
