In this project I worked with ArcGIS online to create a visual of the walking times and distances for the schools in DC Washington. All of the data was readily available in the system, and I used some of the basic tools to arrange that data in a way that was easy to understand for a casual viewer. The assignment gave me a familiarity with the toolbars on either side of the map, the contents and settings, and with these I was able to change the base layers being shown on the map, the symbology of the school buildings, and the colour gradient that illustrates the walking times.
I think that the colour gradient that shows walking times in particular is a property that can be used in an environmental setting to show ranges of pollution. For example, you wish to illustrate the degrees of pollution from multiple oil spills along a pipeline, using the toolsets provided with ArcGIS online can create a powerful visualization of that data, and of how impactful that type of pollution can be. To be specific, the tool used to create the colour gradient was changing the symbols and colours on the attribute table.
