SPILHAUS ONE WORLD OCEAN MAP

The Spilhaus Projection is a unique and visually striking world map that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the world's oceans. The map features a centered and enlarged southern ocean that is surrounded by land masses, creating a continuous east-west expanse of ocean around the world.

The Spilhaus Projection is an excellent tool for visualizing ocean data and phenomena, as it provides a more accurate representation of the relative sizes of ocean basins and the distribution of water mass around the globe. The map is also useful for highlighting issues related to ocean conservation, such as:

  • the impact of climate change on sea level rise,
  • ocean currents,
  • and marine ecosystems.

By using the Spilhaus Projection to display ocean data, we can gain a greater appreciation of the interconnectedness of our planet's oceans and the critical role they play in shaping our world.

FUNFACT:

The projection is named after its creator, Athelstan Spilhaus, a South African oceanographer and geophysicist who developed the map in the 1940s.
