Tree Canopy Cover of São Gabriel City

Note: This map is a part of a larger study

To cover the study area, only one scene from the CBERS-04A satellite, WPM sensor, from 07/05/2022, was used, obtained free of charge through the Image Generation Division of the National Institute for Space Research (DGI/INPE). The WPM camera has a spatial resolution of 8 meters in the visible and near-infrared bands and 2 meters in the panchromatic band. The choice of the scene was based on the availability of images with lower percentages of clouds and also recent images.

For the calculation of the tree canopy cover in the urban boundary of São Gabriel municipality, a supervised classification was performed using the “Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin”, available in QGIS. As the focus of this study is the tree canopy cover, 20 samples were collected for the “trees” class. For other classes such as water, cloud shadow, field, and bare soil, only 10 samples were collected for each, in order to increase the differentiation and accuracy between the classification of what was indeed tree canopy cover and the other targets.
