Wildfire Rescue Station Locations

For this project, we generated 6 selection criteria, detailed below, in order to recommend sites for additional wildland firefighting locations. Importantly, we consider criteria which allow for airborne firefighting tactics such as helicopters and plans for spreading water and retardant. Using data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) , we selected the Colorado counties with the highest annualized frequency of wildfire risk to put a station in an area with the greatest need. As prop planes often utilize local lakes and rivers as sources of water while fighting fires, we also selected spaces within 5 miles of a lake or reservoir and selected from the largest lakes. To allow for easy access and, if necessary, evacuation, we included a selection of areas within 5 miles of a highway. As mentioned above, wildfire stations often utilize aircraft, so we selected areas with a flat slope; i.e., no greater than 3% grade to meet airplane runway safety requirements. Lastly, it is better to put a new fire station further away from a pre-existing station so that it better serves the community. Using data from Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data (HIFLD), we selected areas that were at least 10 miles away from current fire stations. We identified 3 areas that met all selection criteria and had the largest land area available located in Baca, Los Animas, and San Miguel County Colorado.
