Andean Empires Thematic Map

This project involved creating a historic thematic map depicting the spatial extent of Andean Empires in South America using a multi-software cartographic workflow. Basemap data from Natural Earth and KML boundary datasets were processed and projected in QGIS using the South America Albers Equal Area Conic coordinate system. A print layout was created and exported as an SVG to Adobe Illustrator, where cartographic refinement was completed. Vector data was cleaned, organized into layers, and used to construct land and empire polygons. Symbology, labeling, and visual hierarchy were applied to distinguish empires, modern cities, and archaeological sites. Additional map elements, including inset maps, legend, scale bar, and north arrow, were incorporated. Optional raster enhancements, such as shaded relief, were added in Photoshop to improve visual quality and depth.
