UNDP Ukraine: Just Transition of the Coal Cities
The UNDP Ukraine “Just Transition of the Coal Cities” project addresses the economic and social challenges faced by Ukrainian communities that have long depended on coal mining. With Ukraine planning to phase out coal by 2035, the initiative helps affected regions diversify their economies, strengthen resilience, and prepare for a sustainable future, especially in the context of the ongoing war with Russia.
GIS Contribution and Environmental Analysis
As part of the project’s environmental assessment work, I generated GIS-based maps to analyze environmental conditions in the Donbas region of Ukraine. My analysis focused on selected environmental parameters affecting coal-mining areas, with the goal of illustrating spatial patterns, identifying areas of concern, and supporting evidence-based decision-making for local transition planning.
These GIS outputs contribute to broader UNDP efforts, including:
Decentralized energy development: Supporting the installation of 87 solar power plants at hospitals and water utilities to improve energy security.
Green financing mechanisms: Advancing decarbonization and Energy Service Company (ESCO) initiatives.
Sustainable employment: Promoting green job creation and retraining programs for displaced coal workers.
Capacity building: Training local energy managers and auditors to strengthen technical expertise in energy efficiency.
Innovative planning tools: Applying system mapping and spatial analysis to help coal towns.
