Least-Cost Path Modeling

This project involved building a least-cost path model to identify the optimal trail route between the Many Glacier Hotel and Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Montana. Using ArcGIS Pro’s ModelBuilder, I constructed a workflow to generate a cost surface based on slope (derived from DEM), vegetation types, and stream locations. Each terrain factor was reclassified to reflect travel difficulty. The model then calculated accumulated travel costs across the landscape and computed the optimal path using cost distance and backlink rasters. The result is a proposed trail that minimizes both physical effort and visibility risk in bear-prone terrain. The final outputs included raster and vector trail representations and a comprehensive map layout.
