Multispectral Map-Deep Horizon Oil Spill

As part of an academic activity in the "GEOG 190: Map, Aerial Photo, and Satellite Image Interpretation" unit, I was tasked to visualize and generate true color, false color, and my ideal version of the Landsat 8 image of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill in April-May 2010. The output attached are screenshots of the Multispec output.

  • Utilized Multispec for Digital Image Processing and Spatial Analysis:

    • Enhanced the image via linear stretch and clipping the tails (11%) to imitate Landsat 7 output.

    • Changed the RGB values to recreate true colors and my ideal version (black and white) that vividly captures the entirety of the oil spill.

      • The reasoning for this ideal version is due to the fact that oil spills absorb light more than water.
